Description:

This Bachelor of Science in Agriculture integrates primary crop and livestock production with the skills of entrepreneurship and value-added food processing. Potential graduates will be trained in the Basic Sciences, Skills for Effective Communication, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Crop and Livestock Production Technologies and Food Processing Technologies.

It is the only tertiary level degree of its kind that aligns itself with Caribbean Ministries of Agriculture policy by supplying the human capital needed for agricultural entrepreneurship, food production, and food security. Due to hands-on training graduates of the programme can also gain employment in Crop, Livestock, and Food Processing industries.

Entry Requirements:

  • CAPE Levels 1 and 2 (or equivalent) with grades 1 to 4 in Biology, Chemistry or any other science or related science subject. Students with passes in only one of the required science courses may be accepted and required to take qualifying courses at the Diploma level; OR
  • An ECIAF Diploma in Agriculture, Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, Animal Health, Production, and Veterinary Public Health, Forestry or Ornamental Horticulture; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications may be also considered. 

 

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

 

Career Opportunities:

Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture will be in demand by both the private and public sectors given that the curriculum is being designed to prepare students for rewarding careers in primary production, value added activities and agri-business.

Career paths include crop, livestock, dairy and poultry production and the extensive infrastructure that provides the products and services required for management, marketing and processing. Leadership skills are developed through participation in a wide array of extra-curricular activities, including departmental clubs, incubator development, internship, capstone project.  For those pre-medicine students planning to pursue a career in veterinary medicine can complete all course requirements for admission to the professional curriculum in this emphasis. Additionally, students will be well-grounded in the basic and applied sciences needed for graduate studies at all major institutions.
