Transmitter Engineering Technician

Job Summary

The Transmitter Engineering Technician generally performs work related to the proper functioning and maintenance of the Television Transmitters/Repeaters/Antennas. Monitors and ensures that the transmission and reception of the TV signals are in accordance with local and internationally accepted standards and protocols.

Primary Duties and Functions

  • Installation and testing of new facilities and equipment;
  • Performing both preventative and breakdown maintenance on all TV broadcasting equipment including microwave systems at the Transmitter/Repeater sites, Production House, or on the Outside Broadcast vehicles;
  • Inspecting the main transmitter, STL and ancillary equipment;
  • Performing visual inspection of main antenna system, Heliax, Tower, Tower light and grounding. Reporting any faults or abnormalities; 
  • Aligning all transmitters and their ancillary equipment parameters to within the desired specifications;
  • Maintaining existing broadcasting capabilities and providing timely solutions to problems that may arise in both the RF and Studio Transmission system and other related equipment;
  • Perform RF field strength measurement as required;
  • Setting up microwave transmission equipment to facilitate programming of news and/or production events from remote locations;
  • Setting up and performing alignment procedures of all equipment at the Transmitter sites, the Production House, and Outside Broadcast vehicles;
  • Ensuring all ancillary equipment in support of the broadcast activities is operational;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Experience and General Requirements

  • Technician Degree in Television Broadcasting/RF Electronics or Advance RF Electronics from a recognized institution.
  • “O” Level  and/or “A” Level passes in Mathematics, Physics, Technical Drawing and English
  • Certificate in Information Technology (Operations and Maintenance) 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in using TV RF Test equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair TV broadcasting equipment at all levels, including Studio, Microwave and Transmitters
  • Ability to analyze and solve technical problems in a creative way especially on emergency transmitter site visits.
  • Must own a valid driver’s licence.
  • Ability to prepare reports as required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • Must demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the principles and theory of electronics and theory of television broadcast/RF technology.
