REGISTRAR OF THE SUPREME COURT
SALARY: $71,400.00 per annum (tax free)
Working under the direction of the Chief Justice, the post-holder will be responsible for the efficient day-to-day operations of the Supreme Court and its Registry. He/She will issue process and ensure due execution of judgments; supervise the administration of cases including setting dates for and issuing hearing notices; ensure that all files are properly maintained; manage the Registry Office and supervise staff and correspond with Attorneys and Litigants.
By reason of section 8(4) of the Supreme Court Ordinance [Cap 2.02] the Registrar has all the powers which are exercisable by any Master or Registrar of the High Court of Justice in England. In general terms, the jurisdiction of a Master of the Supreme Court in England is that of a Judge in Chambers. Accordingly, the post-holder will deal with taxation and interlocutory applications heard in Chambers including assessment of damage. The post-holder will also hear applications for financial relief under Part III of the Matrimonial Causes Ordinance 2012.
The post-holder will also act as the Registrar of the Court of Appeal and be responsible for the preparation of appeal bundles and scheduling the sittings of Court under the direction of the President of the Court of Appeal.
The post-holder is expected to train, develop and appraise staff in the Court’s offices in Providenciales and Grand Turk.
The post-holder is supported by a Senior Deputy and a Deputy Registrar.
Candidates for this position must:-
have a minimum of seven (7) years post-admission experience
be qualified for admission under the Legal Profession Ordinance (Cap 2:10) to practice as an Attorney of the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands or admitted to practice as a barrister of solicitor in a Commonwealth jurisdiction or Ireland
The post-holder will be a person in public life as set out in Schedule 1 of the Integrity Ordinance and will be required to make a declaration of financial affairs in accordance with Ordinance.
REMUNERATION PACKAGE INCLUDES :
PROFESSIONAL ALLOWANCE - $6,000 per annum
TELEPHONE ALLOWANCE - $1,800 per annum
TRANSPORTATION ALLOWANCE - $ 2,760 per annum
HOUSING ALLOWANCE – $18,000.00 per annum
For persons recruited outside of the Turks and Caicos Islands, there is a three (3) year contract extendable by mutual agreement. Other benefits in addition to the above allowances include an end-of-contract gratuity of 15% of salary; return passage for family of up to two children under the age of sixteen (16) years as well as duty free concession on the shipment of personal effects imported within first six (6) months of appointment.
