Plant Engineer-Electrical & Instumentation

JOB SUMMARY

Provides authoritative technical expertise and Management support with respect to planning, maintenance, trouble-shooting, project and installation work on all plant electrical and instrumentation systems, and associated facilities (including switchgear, motors and process control instrumentation) in order to improve operational efficiency and maintain continuity of plant operations. Provides training for Engineers, Plant Inspectors and E&I Technicians.

INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Relates internally with all plant personnel to co-ordinate work, obtain and provide technical information and advice.

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Relates externally with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Contractors, Vendors, Factory Inspectorate and Electrical Utility Companies (T&TEC) to obtain information, technical advice and to ensure work is performed in accordance with sound electrical and engineering standards.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Responsible for E&I Engineers and Departmental activities.
  • Exercises technical supervision and control over workers engaged in the planning, installation, utilization, maintenance and repair of all electrical and instrumentation equipment for the entire plant.
  • Examines electromechanical installations, instrumentation, valves and fittings for defects such as cracks, corrosion and leaks for the plant.
  • Prepares inspection reports to indicate nature of repairs and replacements required and specifies safe limits of temperature, pressure and other operational parameters to follow pending repair of unit/s on the plant.
  • Assists in the development and administration of a preventative maintenance programme for the plant.
  • Supervises and directs the preparation of drawings for fabrication and erection of any component parts of the plant and ensures accurate interpretations of design.
  • Reviews and/or generates specifications for maintenance and repair works, and checks to ensure compliance with sound engineering practice and safety standards.
  • Assists the Chief Engineer in research and development work concerning electrical and electronic systems and equipment on the plant.
  • Assists the Chief Engineer in technical and administrative matters such as staffing, departmental protocol and procedures, and departmental budget preparation and planning.
  • Reviews and/or prepares initial designs and plans including estimates of quantities and costs of materials and labour required for new installations, modifications and maintenance work.
  • Applies knowledge of instrumentation and electrical engineering theory and practices to recognize and solve problems arising in course of work.
  • Assists in the selection and/or development of detailed training programmes and carries out on-the-job training of E&I Technicians.
  • Recommends action in respect to departmental discipline and procedure if and when necessary.
  • Assists in the selection and appraisal of subordinate staff and recommends promotion, training etc.
  • Assists in the preparation of policies and procedures at department level and implementation of all departmental policy and procedures company wide.
  • Prepares technical and general reports as and when required.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.Sc. in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering or equivalent and seven to ten years (7-10) relevant work experience in a process industry.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • In-depth knowledge of E&I test equipment, high voltage switch-gear and process control instrumentation.
  • Experienced in planning and executing project-related works.
  • Good supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and administer a Preventative Maintenance Programme.
  • Fully Computer literate with special competencies in spreadsheet, planning and database applications.
  • High level of ability to handle troubleshooting; a high degree of analytical ability to handle electrical and instrumentation problems and a capacity to produce detailed engineering and design work.
  • Demonstrated Leadership ability.
