| Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, with more than 6,000 brands and 10,000 products, commenced operations in the Caribbean in 1914 with the establishment of a Trading Agency, a branch of Nestlé Anglo-Swiss Milk Company of Switzerland, at Marine Square, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. Among the earliest products supplied were Sweetened Condensed Milk and Nestlé chocolates. Later Lactogen and Milo were introduced.
Trinidad Food Products Limited was registered as a Company and construction of manufacturing facilities commenced at Valsayn, Trinidad, in 1959. The factory was completed in 1962. Initial production comprised of Sweetened Condensed Milk (Teapot Brand) and Sterilized Plain and Flavoured Milks in glass bottles. These processing operations coincided with the commencement of regular collection of local farmers' milk, every single day of the year. Through consistent effort, collection has grown continuously over the last thirty-five years to close to 10 million kilograms. Efforts like this made the Company a very important contributor to the development of Trinidad & Tobago’s dairy industries. In 1968, new manufacturing facilities were constructed to produce Nescafé soluble coffee from local Robusta beans. Local manufacture of Milo, which was previously imported, also commenced at that time. In 1972, Trinidad embarked on a pioneering operation with the introduction of the UHT process for packing of milks and juices. Although this process was used in other Nestlé companies, Trinidad as the first in the Western Hemisphere really developed the process. Nestlé, in keeping with its policy of the "long haul" approach commenced an expansion of its facilities in Valsayn, Trinidad. This expansion included increased factory capacity and the building of a centralized Sales and Distribution Complex, which were completed in 1984. In 1989, manufacture of Evaporated Milk in Tetra Packs began - a new product concept developed with the assistance of our technical advisers. By January 1991, Trinidad Food Products Limited was re-designated Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NTTL). NTTL is now an integral part of the restructured Nestlé Caribbean Region (other offices in Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic), with its regional headquarters in the Dominican Republic. |
