The Medical Laboratory Technician III will report to the Manager, Para Clinical Services.
Main Responsibilities
• Coordinate and perform medical laboratory tests and a variety of complex technical tasks in relevant laboratory disciplines while ensuring quality results for use in diagnosis and management of patients.
• Supervise and appraise all technical and clerical staff assigned to the various sub-units.
• Organise and assign duties of all technical and clerical staff within the relevant sub-units of the laboratory
• Evaluate laboratory test results and discuss the results with the Clinical Consultant
• Suggest additional tests based on results obtained on evidence of other abnormalities as delegated by the relevant Head of the Laboratory Department.
• Ensure that proper maintenance of the department’s equipment, supplies, records and reports are conducted.
• Provides technical guidance and recommend ongoing training for new and existing staff.
• Coordinates the preparation of culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
• Ensures that written standard operating procedures with protocols for laboratory procedures and investigations are developed and communicated to all relevant staff.
• Ensures that the department’s turnaround times for investigations are achieved and reports are promptly dispatched for collection.
• Develops and evaluate proposals in conjunction with the Clinical Consultant/Head of the Department for new investigative techniques and equipment.
• Liaises with the Clinical Consultant/Head of the Department to determine staffing needs for the department.
• Ensures compliance with health, safety, quality control and other regulatory standards.
• Ensures that infectious materials are properly handled and disposed.
• Adheres to develop, organise and participate in quality assurance programmes to guarantee a consistent and high quality of service.
Minimum Training and Experience
• BSc or Associates' degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a postgraduate diploma/degree in the relevant laboratory discipline would be preferable.
• At least eight (8) years working experience in a recognised medical laboratory, where at least five (5) of which were at supervisory level in the relevant laboratory discipline.
• Registration with the Medical Laboratory Technicians Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
• Laboratory Accreditation Training would be an asset.
