MENTAL HEALTH OFFICER II

The B.V.I Health Services Authority a Client-Centered Care Organisation invites qualified applicants for the position of  MENTAL HEALTH OFFICER II.  The Mental Health Officer II will be responsible for nursing management of acute and chronic psychiatric patients in the hospital and the community. Functions also includes the role of the Senior Mental Health Officer who supervises the nurses and provide administrative support. The position is also responsible for the promotion of Mental Health Care in the community.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

 

Nursing Supervision

 

  1. Has direct responsibility for the management and supervision of nursing staff in the Mental Health Unit.
  2. Primarily responsible for ensuring all crisis situations are handles in an appropriate and timely manner in the first instance.
  3. Ensures all clients are assigned to a case manager whether or not active case management is needed.
  4. Monitors’ nursing care to ensure that quality and timely care is provided to all clients at all times.

Nurse Management of Patients

 

  1. Conducts interviews, examines and performs initial and ongoing physical and mental Health assessments of patients.
  2. Conducts initial assessment and intervention in crisis situations.
  3. Develops and implements nursing care, plans appropriate family and client needs
  4. Documents findings of interventions and evaluation on patients’ chart.
  5. Participates actively in management and discharge planning.
  6. Actively participates in rehabilitation of patients
  7. Plans required medical therapy and appropriate nursing intervention under the direction of a Psychiatrist.
  8. Educate patients regarding diagnosis and treatment plan, including side effects of prescribed medications.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  10. Assist with incorporating research finding and best evidence into day-to-day clinical practice.
  11. Assist with maintain a safe, healthy and supportive working environment, consistently demonstrating safe practices.

 

Administrative Duties

 

 

 

  1. Responsibility for ensuring unit clinics and activities are covered by nursing staff- i.e. preparation of schedule for clinics, emergency/crisis call etc.
  2. Ensure that accurate collection and recording of patient activity is done before submission for data –entry.
  3. Prepares and submits quarterly reports with regards to nursing activity in unit.
  4. Plans, coordinates and implements recruitment and hiring of nursing personnel for the unit.
  5. Ensure that all nursing staff is properly oriented to the unit and has appropriate job descriptions and performance objectives developed.
  6. Review performance of nursing staff annually and assist with development of performance objectives developed.
  7. Assist, participates and monitors development and implementation of nursing care policies and procedures for Mental Health Services.
  8. Works closely with the Director of Mental Health Services to develop, plan and implement new services. Ensures that nursing staff training needs are met to adequately provide these services.

Liaise with the Director of Mental Health Services to organize and develop public education events or mental health promotion activities

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

Education & Experience

  • BSc. In Nursing - Accredited

  • Registered Nurse with post graduate training in Psychiatry

     

  • Training:

  • Registered General Nurse

  • Registered Psychiatric Nurse

  • Certificate in Management would be an asset

  • Certificate in elements of Social Work would be an asset

     

    Licenses and/or registrations

  • Must be a Registered Nurse with BVI Nursing Council

  • Valid BVI Driver’s License

     

     

    Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Registered Nurse with post basic psychiatric training

     

  • Mature judgment, critical decision-making and acute observatory skills

  • A pleasant and open personality and ability to get along with others

  • Inherent interest in Mental Health and the desire to work in Psychiatry

     

     

    SALARY:

  • Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
