The successful candidate will be required to assist in the provision of corporate secretariat and legal services to the National Insurance Board.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide legal advice and opinions on all matters required by the Board, its Business Units and departments.
Review and draft contracts, leases, conveyances, bonds, securities, bill of sale, mortgages, deeds of variation, deeds of release and other legal documents.
Recover contribution and mortgage arrears from defaulting employers or mortgages.
Conduct appeals on behalf of the NIBTT at the National Insurance Appeals Tribunal.
Review and advise the NIBTT on pursuing criminal proceedings relative to benefit fraud against the National Insurance System.
Liaise with external Attorneys with respect to the legal portfolio including the preparation of briefs to external counsel.
Represent the department on various internal committees as appointed by the Legal Business Unit Head.
Assist with the preparation of departmental reports and business unit plans.
Assist with the provision of training on the National Insurance Act.
Assist in developing recommendations for amendments to the National Insurance Act and drafting required legislation.
Represent the NIBTT as instructing and advocate attorney (if necessary) at the Industrial Court, Magistrates' Cout, High Court and Court of Appeal.
Conduct legal research on various issues.
Preforms other related work as may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Laws Degree (2nd Class Honours) from a reputable University.
Legal Education Certificate.
Current Practicing Certificate from the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago.
At least four (4) to five (5) years experience in litigation with emphasis in civil litigation.
Experience in a corporate environment will be an asset.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Ability to analyze, interpret and advise on legal instruments
Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from insured persons under the N.I. Act
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Strong initiative and high level of self-motivation
Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
Stong research skills
Knowledge of N.I. Act, Companies Act and other compliance and regulatory legislation applicable to the NIBTT
