Job Title: Industrial Relations Officer

Job Purpose : To encourage effective organizational practices that will create and maintain healthy labor-management relations, employment conditions and levels of productivity at the Company.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  1. Create and maintain a productive and peaceful industrial relations climate at the Company
  2. Advise on good industrial relations practices and procedures including but not limited to, negotiations, arbitration, dispute resolution, disciplinary procedures, termination and other regulations relating to employment  and assist in arranging training for all levels of management to fully appreciate them
  3. Assist in the development , formulation and implementation of employee relations policies, programs and procedures
  4. Assist the Human Resource Department in developing and administering a code of discipline
  5. Assist in the development and implementation of the Human Resource Policy Manual and ensure inclusion of key IR policies
  6. Assist with the drafting of employment contracts for different classification of workers
  7. Ensure orientation of new hires include an appreciation of code of discipline and relevant IR Policies.
  8. Assist in the development of productivity based wage adjustment policies and procedures and align it to proper administration of the performance management appraisal system
  9. Encourage workplace consultation, arbitration and employee conflict resolution  
  10. Establish two-way formal and informal internal communication channels to ensure transparency in the industrial relations system
  11. Undertake negotiations on terms and conditions of employment, wage structures, employee status and other industrial relations matters
  12. Assist in the development and administration of an employee classification structure, wage structure and related matters
  13. Ensure timely compliance under the labor laws
  14. Assuring discipline by taking disciplinary actions against delinquent workers
  15. Meet monthly meetings with the union to address grievances and outstanding matters in order to create and maintain a conducive environment
  16. Prepare draft Collective Agreement proposals to be submitted to management
  17. Research, collect, compile and disseminate reliable data to the benefit of all levels of employee
  18. Interface with all departments to ensure the company processes and procedures are compliant
  19. Examines, analyze and attempt to resolve industrial disputes and grievances in the workplace
  20. Conduct the necessary research for labor related issues
  21. Represent management in the collective bargaining process, in dialogues with the union, in negotiations and the industrial court or tribunals
  22. Submit monthly reports to the Human Resource Development Manager
  23. Any other related duties that may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Human Resource Management/Labor Law
  • Diploma in Industrial Relations
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in an industrial relations environment handling grievances and conflict resolution.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered.
  • Sound knowledge of Labor laws of Trinidad and Tobago
  • Experience in Compensation management and Performance management systems will be an asset
