FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST (HPC/MO 4) (CONTRACT) 

emoluments:        J$7,048,124.04 per annum

(*plus other allowances and benefits applicable)     

           

JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Director of Legal Medicine, the incumbent will be responsible for undertaking medico-legal examinations and autopsies to ascertain the cause of death, the time of death and the manner of death (natural causes, homicide, suicide, etc.) 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts medico-legal autopsies on cases including homicides and criminally suspicious deaths in order to identify victims, locate signs of trauma and identify factors that indicate time, manner and cause of death;
  • Performs on-the-spot examination of decomposed bodies and provide opinion on stated cases;
  • Supervises the removal of bodies from death scenes using proper equipment and supplies;
  • Collect and preserves samples for  toxicological analyses and prepare relevant documents for permanent  records;
  • Conducts lectures and demonstrations at Morgue with Police Trainees, Legal, Dental and Medical students;
  • Present timely and expert opinion and evidence to key stakeholders involved in the investigation of sudden or unexpected deaths
  • Attend court of law and provide expert testimony on cases examined in order to assist with the administration of justice.
  • Provide information concerning circumstances of death to relatives of the deceased;
  • Attend scenes of crime upon request of Police Officers;
  • Direct activities of morgue attendants and the Investigating police while conducting autopsies;
  • Maintain effective liaison with District Medical Officers;

Minimum Qualification & Experience: 

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or any other relevant postgraduate qualification in the specialty of Forensic Pathology
  • Five years working experience after postgraduate qualification in Forensic Pathology
  • Familiarity with various forensic disciplines including chemistry, biology, ballistics and DNA
