We invite applications for a new Digicel Opportunity - Fixed Switch Engineer
Primary objective of the job:
- Maintain the Network Core for Fibre Optic to the Home (FTTH) and related nodes to deliver the highest possible quality service to our
customers. Monitor key KPIs and effect changes where necessary to ensure the best quality at the lowest cost.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with design and engineering of reliable, high performance and manageable data complexes for existing services/platforms as well as
new service offerings
- Perform hands-on system engineering and systems administration work, which will in many cases require night maintenance window work
- Ability to quickly respond to critical service impacting issues with intuitive out-of-the-box ideas and solutions
- Prioritize multiple high-visibility projects and drive decisions and resolutions for unique problems that may not have existing/complete
solutions
- Work with local groups to develop and complete design, sizing, and call flow models to ensure platforms being sized and installed will meet
performance and capacity requirements
- Responsible for assisting in the purchasing and coordinating the installation and implementation of hardware equipment necessary for
capacity growth and new functionality of data platforms
- Interact with cross functional teams, Planning, Maintenance Engineering, Transport, Provisioning, Data Mediation, Revenue assurance and
other organizations to design and deploy components for best efficiency and reliability.
- Submit NSRs, PSRs and all other requests necessary to bring the platform on the network
- Assist and co-ordinate performance benchmarking on the platforms as well as identify hardware best suited for the platform while bearing in
mind the space, power and cooling requirements/constraints and work with vendors to fully understand needs of the application to optimize
system and storage configuration to achieve highly and reliable capacity ratings
- Work with capacity SME's and planning organizations to develop and implement strategies and tactical plans for ensuring sufficient network
capacity of infrastructure platforms
- Effectively manage vendors and work with them to obtain quotes, negotiate pricing, and ensure their products and services meet Verizon
Wireless' requirements and standards.
- Hold vendors accountable if their products and/or services fail to meet expectations and standards.
- Work with vendors to integrate systems into production
- Ensure the value of the products and services received are in line with vendor pricing, PO's are in compliance with company procurement
policies, and that invoices are paid on time.
- Assist in providing subject matter expertise.
- Help train new team members.
- Provide presentations to other groups as required
Preventative and Corrective Maintenance
- Assess maintenance needs including related time and costs
- Manage Network upgrades/expansions to ensure compliance with existing policy and practice for eg. Planned works
- Create structured reporting formats to concisely capture all relevant activities. Both for weekly status of activities as well as for emergency
fault reporting
- Provide feedback on quality of reports received -to be used as an ongoing assessment of performance
- Ensure the timely completion of preventative maintenance routine assignments on all nodes.

- Manage the maintenance of accurate records of all changes.
- Write software for the various nodes
- Identify the need for and implement network optimization, expansions and enhancements
- Monitor all signalling links and performance KPIs to prevent losses on all nodes to ensure 99.99% availability.
- Ensure all hardware and software faults in the core switches and their related transmission equipment are resolved within the agreed SLA.
- Manage relationships with local interconnects and integrated Digicel Business units (BUs) on Interconnect issues
- Manage vendor relationships to ensure accountability through adherence to contract and SLA.
- Ensure that adequate capacities are available at all times across all nodes (including GSM switches, CDMA switch, SCPs and Cisco ITP)
and Trunk routes
- Support owners of Real time billing platforms connected to NSS nodes
- Provide support as final Digicel Jamaica internal point of escalation for subscriber configuration issues.
- Provide Technical Support to all other Digicel Markets
Provisioning
- Implement new and upgraded software and hardware
- Design and implement fibre expansion between core nodes and third party nodes
- Perform Network configurations (e.g. Digit analysis, MTP3 and SCCP routing)
- Manage the Integration of new nodes
- Manage the integration of new Digicel territories
- Design and Implement new products or Services and support business in developing Technical and Service description. (Jamaica has been
the test bed for most of Digicel's products)
Statistical Analysis of Data
- Analyze routine measurement results
- Analyze traffic data information
- Keep accurate records of all events and system configuration.
- Analyze traffic statistical data to enable early fault detection.
- Prepare Measurement Programs on core switches to provide statistics for network planning.
Administrative
- Keep accurate records of all events and system configuration.
- Analyze traffic statistical data to enable early fault detection.
- Prepare and submit weekly reports.
- Establish and maintain office equipment log.
- Ensure the security of all system files and billing information
- Prepare data transcript for Planned Works/Network Expansion.
- Prepare Measurement Programs on core switches to provide statistics for network planning.
- Provide cross-training to other teams
- Provide on-the-job training for new members of staff
Academic qualifications and experience required for job:
- Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in Telecommunications or any other related field.
- Minimum three (3) years' experience in the telecommunications field
Functional Skills:
- Ability to multi-task
- Excellent time management skills
- Ericsson AXE training
- Generic telecommunication training.
- Working knowledge of Fibre.
- Appreciation for IP
- Understand SS7 signaling.
- Understanding IN platforms.

- Volume of work and associated deadlines consistently require working beyond the 8 hour day. Averaging 10 hours.
- Long and often odd hours (to facilitate work in low traffic period)
- Frequent travel to remote site at odd hours
- Perform on-call duties to ensure that 24/7 technical support is available
