SPECIAL PROGRAMMES

Distance Learning Department

On the 27th April 2011 the Honourable Errol McLeod, Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development opened the Distance Learning Unit at the Cipriani College of Labour ad Co-operative Studies.

The College decided to expand and integrate the use of distance learning technology due to various reasons which can be listed as follows:

• Lack of the Human Resource factor at the various satellite centres.
• The demand for courses only offered at the flag ship centre in Valsayn.
• The need to integrate new and emerging technology as part of their market strategy.

The College hopes that with the use of this new technology, hardware and software, and technical support services we will be able to support all of our centres; that we will be able to improve distance education communications with students and other stakeholders both internal and external.

The major satellite centre of Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies is the Tobago Campus. With this campus fulfilling all three of the reasons as stated above, with the most prominent being the lack of human resources at the centre, it was decided to set up the receiving signal at this centre.

Specialised Training
The Specialised Training Unit under the leadership of Ms Petal Dawn Hinkson, Executive Assistant to the Director and Coordinator of the activities of the Unit continues to construct programmes that are designed to match the needs of all our stakeholders who desire training and career development for their employees/members. This Department falls under the purview of the Director’s Office and has been mandated to analyze the educational and developmental needs of the College’s stakeholders and plan, implement and evaluate specific programmes and/or courses that seek to satisfy their needs.

10-Saturday Introductory Courses
Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies offers quite a large number of outreach courses for a Ten (10) Saturday’s period, each session being four (4) hours long. These courses are aimed at specific audiences at times, while at other times the general population is invited to enroll. Many of these courses are prerequisite for other courses and programmes, especially in cases where the participant may not have the traditional qualification to enter into a certificate programme. Most of these courses are of an introductory nature and, as such, they are required before one can move on to a more advanced course in that area. They do not, however, guarantee admission into the more advanced courses. These courses tend to give an overview of the subject area being taught. These courses are generally offered at three venues – Valsayn, San Fernando and Tobago.

Continuing Studies
The Department of Continuing Studies falls under the purview of the Academic Division, which is headed by the Deputy Director Academic Affairs. The Continuing Studies Department (CSD) oversees the College’s evening programmes in the Valsayn Campus, Pleasantville and El Dorado Centres.
The department also has a functional relationship with the Tobago Centre and ensures that all services, operational, programme and teaching material are in sync with all the other centres. The establishment of this department is also recognition of the validity of lifelong learning in a globalized world.
