JOB SUMMARY:
This managerial position has system wide responsibility for the efficient administration of the Attorney General’s Chambers and resolution of complex legal matters arising in the area of or connected with the Public Service, civil litigation (including Judicial Review) and International Mutual Legal Assistance. Providing supervision to other professional and clerical staff, the Deputy Attorney General is expected to generate satisfactory results when the qualitative and quantitative output of the staff is at a high level, the expenditure of the Attorney General’s Chambers is within the limits of the budget, and credible legal advice is provided to the Government in a timely manner when necessary.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for the effective management of the Attorney General’s Chambers. It has departmental and governmental accountability for:-
The efficient administration of the Attorney General’s Chambers including the Lands Division.
The adequate distribution of the Attorney General’s Chambers' budget.
The quality of professional judgement when representing the Government in negotiations and litigation.
The credibility of the legal advice given.
The efficiency in preparing cases for trial in the Magistrate’s Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
In the absence of the Attorney General performing the functions of that office.
Supervising the day to day administration of the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Overseeing both professional and clerical staff in the performance of their functions.
Assisting in the preparation of the budget.
Managing the finances of the Attorney General’s Chambers within the limits of the budget.
Receiving monthly updates from each Division of the Chambers, giving advice and making recommendations when necessary.
Advising on all Public Service matters and representing the Government in all proceedings arising there from.
Overseeing all International Mutual Legal Assistance matters as well as judicial review matters.
Performing such other functions/tasks as the Attorney General may from time to time assign.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
In addition to a Bachelor of Laws degree or equivalent, the position requires that the incumbent possess a Legal Professional Certificate or its equivalent, is called to the Bar in the Turks and Caicos Islands and has specialized training in Public Law, and Management.
The position requires a Master’s Degree in Law or its equivalent.
The position requires at least five (5) years on the job experience to acquire the necessary competencies to effectively respond to the challenges of the functions.
REMUNERATION PACKAGE:
SALARY - $103,800.00 per annum
TRANSPORTATION ALLOWANCE - $2220.00 per annum
TELEPHONE ALLOWANCE - $1200.00 per annum
PROFESSIONAL ALLOWANCE - $6,000.00 per annum

For persons recruited from outside of the Turks and Islands, a two (2) year contract extendable on mutual agreement to three (3) years is offered. Other benefits, in addition to the stated allowances include an end-of-contract gratuity of 15% of salary; return passage, business class or equivalent, for family of up to two children under the age of sixteen (16) years as well as duty free concession on the shipment of personal effects imported within six (6) months of appointment.
