 DWDM Engineer

Primary objective of the job:

This role is responsible for planning, design, upgrade, acceptance and maintenance of the DWDM Network in Digicel's network. This person is required to have a strong knowledge of associated fibre optic technologies and optionally but desired, working IP knowledge. Additionally, the person will be responsible for supporting other sections, where needed, to facilitate expansions and fault resolution within acceptable timeframes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all DWDM equipment is functioning as per design. Proactively look at ways to improve the DWDM network.
  • Network Rollout and Site Surveys: Coordinate and supervise site visits for DWDM installations to ensure transmission equipment feasibility. Develop solutions to service both internal and external customer capacity and connectivity requirements.
  • To design and perform link budget for fibre optic network and identify losses along the way.
  • To be able to do wavelength planning on the DWDM network and configure.
  • Network Operations: Provisioning and testing of circuits traversing the DWDM network.
  • Routine testing and quality validation of fibre optic facilities according to global standards.
  • Vendor Management: Ability to oversee vendors in the design and implementation of projects affecting the DWDM network.
  • System Records: Ensure all DWDM documentation, signal flow and fibre connection diagrams are up to date.
  • Routines: Ensure all routines are conducted with immediate follow up on all exceptions. Ensure documentation and recording systems to reflect same are prepared.
  • Faults and Emergencies: Investigate, troubleshoot and restore service for any transport related outage or fault. Aid in root cause analyses and follow up activities.
  • System Performance Analysis: Review the network to optimize performance, including Bit Error Rate [BER], packet loss and any other quality related analyses. Produce reports on network health and key performance indicators.
  • Acceptance Testing: Verify the appropriate function of equipment according to specification.
  • Mentor and train engineers within the team and oversee training and development plans for same.
  • Be able to co-ordinate effectively with external markets and offer assistance when the need arises.
  • Make recommendations to Opex and Capex budget planning together with supporting management and analysis.

Academic qualifications and experience required for job:

  • BSc. Computer Science / Information Technology
  • Strong working knowledge of carrier grade DWDM service provider networks
  • Any international certifications including Cisco/Juniper or other
  • An acceptable combination of academic qualifications and work experience may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

  • Experience in and with the mobile telecommunications sector would be considered a valuable asset.

  • Required to work normal hours of Monday to Friday 8am - 5pm

  • Required to travel to remote locations, where necessary
