The University of the Southern Caribbean invites applications for the following position:

CHAIR- COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.1. Administrative:

  • Develops, in collaboration with key stakeholders, the strategic directions for the
  • Department and in so doing, ensures congruence of same with the strategic plans of the
  • School of Science and Technology and the University.
  • Manages the strategic and operational aspects of the Computer Science Department
  • inclusive of class scheduling; human resource, facilities and budget management; as well as performance monitoring and evaluation of full-time and part-time faculty and staff.
  • Engages in resource management and strategic procurement to ensure that faculty members are provided with the resources necessary for efficient execution of their duties.
  • This includes provision of relevant texts, equipment and supplies in a timely manner.
  • Works collaboratively with the Dean and Human Resource Staff in the recruitment,selection and professional development of appropriate personnel for the Department and satellite sites as required.
  • Establishes a system for monitoring and management of class attendance records, as well as other established academic administration procedures, to ensure conformity with School and University policies, inclusive of the GATE, ACTT and AAA requirements.
  • Engages in program evaluation to determine cost effectiveness, sustainability and academic suitability.
  • Prepares, manages, and executes the Department’s budgeting process.
  • Establishes a communication system, inclusive of scheduled meetings and webpage maintenance, for keeping faculty, staff and students abreast of the plans, decisions and information that are related to the Department, School and University.
  • Supports and provide leadership for academic research within the Department.
  • Provides reports upon request, inclusive of Annual and Mid-year Board Reports, to the Dean.

  • Reviews course outlines to ensure conformity with policy guidelines of the School and University.
  • Manages the process of academic advisement to Computer

  • Manages the process of academic advisement to Computer Science Majors and Minors.
  • Assigns faculty for advisement of students.
  • Manages the scheduling of courses offered through the Department, to include the assignment of faculty and/or instructional staff.
  • Guides the management of academic and professional honors clubs among the students in the Department, to include the nomination of faculty sponsors for each group on an annual basis.
  • Works collaboratively with the Curriculum Committee to continuously manage the process of curriculum development and approval.
  • Manages the process of identifying, designing and determining feasibility for new courses and programmes.
  • Engages in academic work, to include teaching and research.

1.3. Organizational Culture

  • Promotes education in a Christian environment in accordance with the faith and learning mandate of the University and the principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
  • Creates an environment that facilitates conformity with the morals, values and philosophy of the University.

2. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or any related area of study, from an accredited institution; and
  • At least six (6) years teaching experience - three (3) of which should be in a leadership role – at the tertiary level.
  • Consideration will also be given to candidates with a Masters degree in Computer Science or related field, with extensive experience in teaching and leadership at the tertiary level.
