Apprentice Gluing Operator
Summary
The Gluing Operator is to ensure that jobs are correctly prepared, folded, glued, and packed correctly using the prepared board types while ensuring that the quality and integrity of the job is maintained to the highest level. This position requires a self directed, team oriented individual who takes pride and ownership in his/her work, and is willing to accept total responsibility for the performance of the gluing operation on his/her shift. This individual must possess good mechanical skills and be able to demonstrate their ability to produce quality product at levels that will allow the plant to meet or exceed its goals and objectives. The process involves the setting up of each job, the running of each job, intermittently checking the quality and integrity of the job, and maintaining machine operations at optimum levels before, during and after jobs are run.
Job Knowledge
1) To be fully knowledgeable of all the machine features i.e.; fold types, folding preparation, adjusting glue lines, packaging, etc.
2) To understand how to make adjustments to the machine and other aspects of the machine as required
3) To make ready jobs within the specified time frame. This includes changeover from one job to another
4) To understand how to prepare and adjust machine to fold various box types
5) To understand how to prepare and adjust machine to glue various box types
6) To fold, glue, and package jobs to defined standards
7) To inspect jobs for gluing defects that do not pass quality standards
8) To successfully balance quality against quantity to ensure adequate production levels and effective job quality
9) To maximize the potential of your assistant by assigning duties and following up on his/her results in an effort to ensure effective job runs
10) To guide and train your assistant to act as your support, so that they are able to run the machine in your absence
11) Keep surroundings clean
12) Knowledge of preventative maintenance on the machine
13) Knowledge of basic repairs to machine
Duties
1) Makes adjustments on machines and ensures all mechanical parts are running smoothly
2) Checks glue lines
3) Fixes and cleans all machines (PM's and other general repairs)
4) Inspects boxes coming off machine to ensure they are glued and formed properly throughout shift
5) Maintains the correct level of glue on all machines
6) Documents maintenance report, log sheet, QA checks and production
7) Assists shift supervisor as needed
8) Provides relief for breaks as needed
9) Keeps area and machine clean throughout the shift
10) To ensure that all operator documentation (i.e. electronic and/or manual) are accurately completed and submitted in a timely manner as required by management

12) Carry out all preventative maintenance tasks as required by the operation
13) Follows safety rules
14) Follow all product safety guidelines
15) Monitor product flow from strippers and die-cutting to gluing machines
16) Ensure that work areas are clean and that good manufacturing practices are fully complied with
17) Ensure compliance with all safety programs and maintain hazard free work areas
18) Responsible for the manufacture of safe, legal and quality product
19) Must be able to adjust own work schedule in order to maintain a shift operation (may require overtime as operation requires)
20) Be able to effectively communicate with team members to support a self-directed work environment
21) Use sound judgment in exercising caution to insure personal safety and the safety of others
22) Starts machine and inspects sample boxes to determine conformity to specifications
23) To inspect jobs for gluing defects or any defects that do not pass quality standards
24) Maintain sufficient training and knowledge about other gluing machines
25) Responsible for meeting all standards in quality, production, waste and attendance
26) Maintain equipment – daily and periodic cleaning
27) Perform basic machine repairs required
28) Perform preventative maintenance
29) Maintain a reasonable distance to listen for and identify any problems with machine
30) Maintain quality control checks – verify board path is correct and ensure that folding, gluing, and packaging is being done accurately
31) Other tasks that may be assigned by management from time to time
Reporting
This position reports to the Gluing Operator Team Leader
Education and Experience
1) A commitment to maintain the highest standard of work and the efficient delivery of same
2) High school diploma or equivalent
3) At least two years of tertiary education or experience in the field of gluing or similar
4) Experience in the Printing and Packaging industry would be a plus, but is not absolutely essential
5) Mechanical background or aptitude
6) Ability to lift and handle up to 50 pounds
7) Ability to read and follow instructions on an order
8) Ability to read and use a ruler
9) Ability to use a computer
10) Ability to do basic math
