Position: Veterinary Technician (Full-time)

 

About St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation

The St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation (SKBRF) is a research organization devoted to advancing the development of therapies for human diseases and the application of related models of disease pathophysiology to drug and device evaluation.  SKBRF applies extensive expertise in many areas of therapeutic and diagnostic research for which clinically relevant models are feasible, with a focus on ophthalmic, central nervous system and metabolic research, as well as pharmacokinetic and safety studies.

Job Summary

The Veterinary Technician performs veterinary care related procedures, assisting the Associate Director Veterinary Services to execute routine and non-routine veterinary care activities.  The Veterinary Technician may assume the responsibilities of a study participant, playing a supportive role in ensuring that animal care and scientific objectives defined within the Study Protocol and Study Execution Plan are followed. 

 

Key Accountabilities of the Role

  • Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or unusual behavior. 
  • Respond to notifications from other departments for veterinary support. 
  • Under the direction of a facility veterinarian, treat animal illnesses or injuries.   
  • Assist in the conduct of study related activities.      
  • Perform and document routine veterinary procedure room maintenance. 
  • Clean and maintain veterinary care spaces and animal procedure and housing environments as required.
  • Restock veterinary procedure areas with routine supplies from the inventory and properly document supply requisition. 
  • Document veterinary care procedures.
  • Perform quality control on recorded veterinary care information and documentation of procedure execution. 
  • Complete assigned training in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to maintenance of training records by ensuring that training is documented. 
  • Comply with Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Ensure compliance with facility SOPs and contribute to their maintenance to ensure that the facility continues to operate in compliance with the local and international guidelines.   

 

 

Qualifications

 

Education level/Certification/Licensures

  • High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required, Associate, or advanced degree preferred. 
  • Certification and licensure as a Veterinary Technician preferred. 
  • AALAS certification at the LAT level desired.  

Experience 

  • At least 2 years of relevant animal care experience, working with livestock, exotics, or other animals.  
  • Good technology use skills and willingness to learn. 

Specific competencies 

  • Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment.
