GraceKennedy (Trinidad & Tobago) Limited invites applications from persons who are dynamic, performance-driven and seeking a challenging role, for the following position: 

 

CHIEF ACCOUNTANT

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this incumbent has overall responsibility for planning, coordinating, and directing the operations of the GKTT accounting department. This candidate will be required to provide timely, complete, and accurate financial and statistical information on GKTT performance. To develop and maintain an effective system of financial reporting, accounting, and related internal controls in a manner consistent with the Group policies and procedures. To ensure effective financial planning and control, including cost monitoring against the annual budget. To directly supervise the Financial and Operational Supervisors and indirectly supervise other members of staff in the Accounting Department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                     

  • To ensure compliance with the approved policies and procedures with respect to all areas of responsibility.
  • To assist the management of GraceKennedy (T & T) Limited to establish realistic financial goals via the annual planning process, by assisting with the review and establishment of appropriate strategic objectives and initiatives to chart the course of the company.
  • To ensure that the Annual and Revised Budgets are prepared on a timely basis, in consultation with the Country Manager and other managers, and reflecting the strategic objectives and initiatives of the company’s Balanced Score Card.
  • To monitor the performance of the company against the approved budgets, ensuring proper cost controls.
  • To prepare Board, Audit Committee and various management reports accurately, in the formats required and on a timely basis, ensuring that the monthly management accounts are submitted to the GKMS and GraceKennedy Limited Corporate Finance Departments by the 4th working day of each month.
  • To effectively supervise, review and approve the Financial and Operational Supervisor’s assigned activities.
  • To act as the Custodian of the Company’s assets, including ensuring adequacy of insurance coverage.
  • To ensure effective cash controls in terms of the bank accounts, courier and floats held at sub-agents. This entails supervision of the processes involved in the maintenance and documentation of daily bank balances, transferring funds between the various stakeholders as necessary, the adherence to established credit terms and receivables kept at minimum.
  • To ensure that all liabilities are serviced regularly and efficiently in terms of payments and documentation.
  • To review the monthly prepared payroll, ensuring that all payments are made in accordance with employment contracts as well as approved changes, and that proper records are maintained for audit purposes.
  • To file all Statutory and Corporation taxation returns on a timely basis. These include payroll deductions, the annual individual TD4 and related Summary, quarterly estimates and final corporation taxes, for submission to the Board’s of Inland Revenue and National Insurance and the Central Bank ofTrinidad and Tobago.
  • Recommend fund allocation strategies which include capital expenditure decisions, profitability/cost benefit analyses, research and development expenditure and savings in labour costs.
  • Any other work-related duties assigned by the Country Manager and Chief Financial Officer from time to time.

STAFFING, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Approve the recruitment, training, promotion of accounting staff.
  • Perform and administer staff performance management programmes for the personnel of the Accounts Department as per established GraceKennedy Limited’s policy and procedures.
  • Recommend the appropriate training and staff development programmes for employees to ensure career development and suitable succession.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE:
  • ACCA or CPA other professional qualifications.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree with major in Finance/Accounting (optional).
  • Four (4) years working experience in a financial management institution preferably including banking or financial services involving extensive cash management.
  • Familiarity with using and implementing computer-based systems.
  • Previous audit experience will be an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong sense of confidentiality and objectivity.
  • High level of maturity and personal initiative.
  • Adaptability to changing accounting and audit environments and requirements
